BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS - AUSTRALIA

This is a link page to all information collected to date on Sterry Births and Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths and Burials in Australia.

Church & Civil Records

The earliest birth, marriage and death records in Australia are from church records. In NSW church records exist from 1787, in Tasmania from 1803, in Queensland from 1829 and in Victoria from 1836. Civil registration became a State responsibility at different dates in different States and Territories: Tasmania from 1839; Western Australia from 1841, South Australia from 1842, Victoria from 1853, New South Wales from 1856, Queensland from 1859 (1856-1858 in NSW records); Northern Territory from 1870 (and from 1856–1863 in the records for NSW; and in the SA records from 1863–1870); ACT from 1930.

Indexes for births, marriages and deaths have been prepared by each State and Territory. These include early church records before civil registration. Different States impose different privacy restrictions on the upper limit to the years that can be searched in their indexes. All are searchable online but not all are free.
